{"id":1127,"date":"2015-04-07T21:49:56","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T21:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/spettacoli-teatro-povero\/ahia-2\/"},"modified":"2016-05-02T20:49:31","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T20:49:31","slug":"ahia","status":"publish","type":"season","link":"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/en\/spettacoli-teatro-povero\/ahia\/","title":{"rendered":"A(h)ia!\u00a0 (Ou(w)t!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/_mamawp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/2007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-460\" src=\"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/_mamawp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/2007.jpg\" alt=\"2007\" width=\"288\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <em>autodrammi<\/em> of Monticchiello had often commented ironically on confrontations between its apparently secure little world and the more brutal aspects of modernity which lay\u2014perhaps\u2014beyond the horizons of the Val d\u2019Orcia.\u00a0 In 2007, however, the imagined \u2018invasions\u2019 of that outside world ceased to be contemplated metaphorically with reference to the siege of 1553, and became an uncomfortable reality.\u00a0 The proposed construction of a new set of houses on the side of the village\u2019s hill were blown up into a major national controversy, bringing a flood of very unwelcome media attention, and causing deep divisions within the village of a type which had not been experienced before.\u00a0 On one side there were hopes that new life, and new residents, could be brought to revive a fading community; on the other side the new houses were seen as an ugly, even \u2018monstrous\u2019, intrusion into a protected UNESCO zone.<\/p>\n<p><em>Autodrammi<\/em> had always aimed to express the real current preoccupations of Monticchiello, and it was hard to contemplate a 2007 show which did not address the issue of the \u2018new houses\u2019.\u00a0 It was also very difficult to face the question in public without provoking and deepening existing antagonisms.\u00a0 The show had to tread a very delicate line between being tactful and being honest.\u00a0 It was noted that the new houses were to be built on what had once been a communal threshing ground, or <em>aia<\/em>; that word now sounded rather like a cry of pain (<em>ahi!<\/em>), and this provided the composite title.<\/p>\n<p>The central conceit of the play was to show Monticchiellesi as uncommunicative \u2018monoliths\u2019, trapped by circumstances within a chalk circle, and resistant to the attentions of passing tourists (as they had been resistant to journalists in the preceding months).\u00a0 There were careful allusions to the controversy of the \u2018new houses\u2019, and also to the question of whether the village should express its feelings on stage.\u00a0 Reference was made by contrast\u2014not for the first time, in this theatre\u2014to the solidarity of the old peasant community in the face of exploitation and eviction.<\/p>\n<p>However, in order to \u2018distance\u2019 the whole script a little, and in order not to open too many wounds, these metaphorical allusions were framed by something apparently less relevant and less controversial: the performance of a sarcastic one-act farce by Chekhov called <em>The Wedding<\/em>.\u00a0 This had been the comfortable entertaining play which the company had mounted a few months earlier, as its Christmas show.\u00a0 If there was any relationship between the two separate components of <em>A(h)ia!<\/em>, the audience had to deduce it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":460,"template":"","class_list":["post-1127","season","type-season","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category_season-autodramma-en","category_season-show"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
