{"id":1141,"date":"2015-04-07T20:31:37","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T20:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/spettacoli-teatro-povero\/sottosilenzio-2\/"},"modified":"2016-05-02T20:40:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T20:40:28","slug":"sottosilenzio","status":"publish","type":"season","link":"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/en\/spettacoli-teatro-povero\/sottosilenzio\/","title":{"rendered":"Sottosilenzio\u00a0 (Keeping Quiet)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/_mamawp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/1993.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-398 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/_mamawp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/1993.jpg\" alt=\"1993\" width=\"269\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Words, and Silence: this year the Teatro Povero addressed on stage these two contrasting values, or sets of behaviour.\u00a0 As always, approaching the subject in two different contexts: that of the peasant society, which everyone still remembered, and that of the modern world.<\/p>\n<p>The first act was a series of scenes set in the 1920s.\u00a0 For peasants, in most contexts, the ability to use words was envied\u2014it seemed to provide power, even a kind of liberation.\u00a0 The words of the Catholic liturgy were respected, though not always understood.\u00a0 The travelling artisan with his salesman\u2019s patter was able to fascinate, and even to control, the less educated and less well informed peasants who were trapped on their farms.\u00a0 And it was shown how under the fascist r\u00e9gime any attempt to instruct the peasants\u2014to give them words which would enable them to express themselves and analyse their condition\u2014was seen by the ruling class as dangerous and something to be suppressed.<\/p>\n<p>In respect of the modern world, in Act II, things were viewed differently.\u00a0 Nowadays we are bombarded technologically by an incessant stream of words and information which, if we think about it, we don\u2019t necessarily want.\u00a0 The village was shown as being hit by a strange disease, whereby people were first compelled to talk incessantly, and then in a second stage refused to talk at all.\u00a0 This dilemma was combined with another one: the increasing suspicion in Monticchiello that the village\u2019s own tool of self-expression, its theatre, was leading to a situation whereby the people were regarded as a display for other people, even as a museum.\u00a0 Attempts by intrusive outsiders to \u2018cure\u2019 the disease left an impasse with no resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The finale tried to break the impasse and reject the extremes: it returned us to a situation of normal conversation, neither too many words nor too few.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":398,"template":"","class_list":["post-1141","season","type-season","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category_season-autodramma-en","category_season-show"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Sottosilenzio\u00a0 (Keeping Quiet) - Teatro Povero di Monticchiello<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/teatropovero.it\/en\/spettacoli-teatro-povero\/sottosilenzio\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Sottosilenzio\u00a0 (Keeping Quiet) - Teatro Povero di Monticchiello\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Words, and Silence: this year the Teatro Povero addressed on stage these two contrasting values, or sets of behaviour.\u00a0 As always, approaching the subject in two different contexts: that of the peasant society, which everyone still remembered, and that of the modern world.
